I recently acquired a teacup poodle, and I needed to find some good pet stores near me; so I thought I would share what I have learned:
A good pet store can be found online in one of two ways. Try a map search using google maps and once you are there, type in "Pet stores in type your zip code here". You will be given results on a map within your desired zip code, along with reviews for each individual pet store.
Yelp is also another viable options that many people in larger cities prefer to use because of the large number of reviews that are available to give an honest overall review of their desired shop, restaurant or service. First tell yelp your zip code, and then you can search for "pet stores". Automatically, you will receive filtered results within your desired area.
Some pet stores offer great prices on pet toys, but markup their food inventories. Other shops specialize in pet food only, often in bulk. Often, online pet stores offer great prices on pet accessories, so don't rule them out. Determine exactly what services that you desire in your pet store.
Remember
1. Don't forget to get some identifying information for your animal, such as a dog tag.
2. Let the professionals show you how to do things. I.E.: Hire a pet groomer to groom your pet, and take mental notes: then do it yourself.
3. Know what you're talking about at the pet store. For instance, ask for a fish tank for one fish, not a fish aquarium (which can cost bundles more).
4. Exercise with your pet doesn't always mean that you have to walk your animal. Pet games (tossing a frisbee, or throwing a tennis ball), are great ways to keep your animal in shape.
It is important to choose a shop that has an expert in dealing with your kind of animal. It will save you a lot of headache and is much cheaper than visiting a vet.
